ITANAGAR, Nov 6: The ‘Itanagar Chalo Abhiyan’ foot march opposing the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) reached Pasighat in East Siang district on Friday after covering around 130 km from Geku in Upper Siang district.

Organised by the Adi Galo Welfare Society (AGWS), the march began on November 4 from Geku, with participants embarking on a 400-km journey to the state capital to press for action on the concerns of communities affected by the proposed mega dam project.

The march is being led by AGWS president Geyi Bagra and spokesperson Karge Basar, who are spearheading the campaign around a four-point charter of demands.

The Society has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all persons detained in connection with the SUMP issue, and initiation of peace talks with its representatives before any dam construction activities are undertaken.

It has also sought revocation of suspension orders issued against Head Gaon Burahs, Gaon Burahs and government employees in connection with the issue, besides withdrawal of paramilitary and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel deployed in SUMP-affected villages.

The organisers have maintained that dialogue and peaceful engagement with affected communities are essential to addressing concerns surrounding the proposed project. Through the march, they intend to draw the attention of the state government and concerned authorities to their demands and seek a peaceful and mutually acceptable resolution.

The march has reportedly received support from residents, villagers and well-wishers along the route. Local people have been extending assistance to the participants by providing food, drinking water, shelter, medicines and other essential supplies.

The organisers said the support from local communities had encouraged the marchers to continue their journey towards Itanagar, where they intend to highlight their four-point charter of demands.
