Young artists explore journalism through colours and creativity

ITANAGAR, Nov 6: Around 12 students from six educational institutions showcased their artistic talent at an inter-college painting competition organised as part of the run-up to National Press Day celebrations at the Arunachal Press Club here on Friday.

The competition featured three themes: Future of News – From Print to Pixels to AI; Truth, Trust and Transparency; and The Reporter on the Ground – Untold Stories.

Students from Rajiv Gandhi Government Polytechnic, Dera Natung Government College, Don Bosco College, National Institute of Technology, Himalayan University and Rajiv Gandhi University participated in the event.

The participants were given three hours to complete their paintings and provided with the necessary materials. All participants received certificates.

The entries were judged by graphic artist Tadam Gyadu, known for his sketches for Marvel Comics, prominent painter Gyamar Nanam, whose works capture rural life and indigenous cultures, and APUWJ general secretary Sonam Jelly, who assessed the entries from a journalistic perspective.

Appreciating the participants, Gyadu said art was an integral part of human history, culture and tradition, adding that artistic expressions serve as enduring records of a community's heritage.

Nanam expressed concern over the declining recognition of art as a primary profession and urged young artists to pursue it seriously. He also assured the participants of his guidance and support in developing their artistic skills.

Jelly appreciated the students' efforts and announced that the winning paintings would be featured in Bugle, the upcoming annual journal of the Arunachal Press Club (APC) and the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ).

Competition co-chair Eliza Deori said the winners would receive cash prizes and citations during the National Press Day celebrations at the State Banquet Hall on November 16.

The competition was organised by the APC and APUWJ. It was coordinated by in-charge Saraswati Gao and her team.
