Gangtok, Jan 12: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik on Monday interacted with officers and all ranks of the 17 Mountain Division during its 65th Raising Day celebrations at the Army Cantonment, Gangtok.
Addressing the Sainik Sammelan, the Governor underlined the Division’s historic and strategic responsibility as the guardian of the North Eastern region and the sentinel of the Siliguri Corridor, describing it as one of the nation’s most sensitive and vital frontiers. He exhorted officers and troops to remain future-ready by embracing technology and innovation as key enablers of operational effectiveness.
Referring to the evolving security environment, the Governor highlighted the growing relevance of Artificial Intelligence (AI), drones, advanced surveillance systems, cyber capabilities, and emerging technologies in contemporary military operations. He stressed that agility, adaptability, continuous learning, and sound perception management would be critical to maintaining combat readiness in the post–Operation Sindoor scenario.
Emphasizing the human dimension of security, the Governor encouraged the Division to further strengthen people-oriented initiatives such as Operation Sadbhavana and Military-Civil Fusion. He noted that meaningful engagement with local communities not only enhances trust and stability but also reinforces national integration and development in border regions.
The Governor complimented the 17 Mountain Division for its illustrious legacy, exceptional professionalism, and steadfast dedication to duty. He paid homage to the Division’s distinguished service record, including its contributions during the World Wars, the liberation of Goa, its pivotal role in the merger of Sikkim with the Union of India, and its exemplary conduct during critical engagements at Nathu La, Cho La, and Doklam.
Expressing his confidence in the Division, Governor Parnaik said that the nation places complete trust in the courage, discipline, and moral strength of its officers and troops. He added that the 17 Mountain Division would continue to uphold its proud traditions and make decisive contributions towards safeguarding national security and realizing the vision of a strong, secure, and self-reliant Viksit Bharat.
Extending his best wishes to all ranks, veterans, and their families, the Governor reminded the troops to always uphold the ethos of “Nation First” while advancing with courage, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to the Tricolour.
Recalling his own tenure as the Division Commander, the Governor spoke of significant milestones such as the opening of the Nathu La Pass for trade in 2006 and the Division’s ongoing role in promoting development, tourism, and community welfare in Sikkim. He also commended the General Officer Commanding, Maj Gen Mahipal Singh Rathore, and all ranks for the exemplary conduct of the Raising Day programme, which he said reflected the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
